San Diego State University (SDSU) is the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in San Diego. The life sciences are central to the teaching and research mission of SDSU. The College of Sciences is composed of eight academic departments and a number of programs which offer bachelor's, master's, and joint doctoral degrees.

The Department of Biology has some 1200 undergraduate majors currently enrolled, many of whom serve the workforce needs of the biotechnology industry after graduation. The department also offers Masters Degrees in numerous fields and Doctorates in cell and molecular biology, ecology and evolutionary biology starting in 2007. Two buildings are being added to the life sciences inventory as well. The BioScience Center (BSC) will house researchers in cardiac physiology and in microbial sciences, while the Coastal Waters Lab will provide research facilities on San Diego Bay for SDSU's marine biologists.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at SDSU has always been a leader in the California State University system. The primary goals of our department are: to offer a strong undergraduate program that prepares chemists for employment or advanced degrees; to offer a strong graduate program for both master's and doctoral degrees; and to maintain a vigorous research program funded with external support. The Joint Doctoral Program combines the resources of SDSU and UCSD to provide doctoral students with a high quality Ph.D. degree.

The Center for Bio/Pharmaceutical and Biodevice Development at San Diego State University provides education and training through distance learning that enhance the professional excellence and career opportunities of scientists in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries.
