Based on discussions with life science industry leaders and faculty from secondary institutions in the region, it was clear that a mechanism needed to be created that would connect business professionals with teachers and students in the classroom environment. The Science Education Speakers Bureau is an innovative program that does just that, matches industry professionals with middle school classroom volunteer speaking/teaching opportunities.

This program is an opportunity for industry to discover one of the most challenging and rewarding professions - teaching. For many students, the opportunity to spend time with an industry representative in a relaxed but structured manner will be a first-time experience that broadens their perception of science career pathways. The ultimate goal of this resource alignment between educators and industry is to increase student proficiency in science.

This co-teaching model for teachers and industry professionals is coordinated county-wide with districts and schools. The Science Education Speakers Bureau is a program where industry professionals can relate real world opportunities in science to young students before they have made their mind up about a career path.

If you are a middle school science teacher that would like to have a volunteer from industry in your classroom or are a business professional that would like to speak in our schools, please contact kgrover@biocom.org to learn how you can become a part of the Science Education Speakers Bureau.
