Partnership with the Governor’s Engineering Apprenticeship
The State has created an apprenticeship model that has particular promise for addressing science and engineering talent needs in the life science workforce. The focus of the model is on providing apprenticeship opportunities to active duty service members and veterans interested in pursuing engineering careers.
The partners in the apprenticeship model are the employer, the State of California, and public education. The veteran is immediately employed in a position that leads toward a higher skill level position. The model includes on the job training as well as formal education through the California State University, the California Community Colleges, or the University of California, depending on the educational and employment needs of the apprentice.
The apprentice has an opportunity to learn on the job, in the culture of the industry. This investment in veterans creates loyal and productive long-term employees. The State has set aside $1 million in Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding to pilot apprenticeship “earn while you learn” programs offered in partnership with employers.
